A stretch of sizzling summer heat is gripping the Chewelah Valley this week, with temperatures reaching the triple digits before a gradual cooling trend and a return to more seasonable conditions by the weekend.
The week begins with sunshine and searing highs near 99 degrees on Tuesday, July 29, prompting health advisories about the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses. Those warnings continue into Wednesday, when the thermometer is expected to peak at a sweltering 101 degrees, despite cloud cover. Overnight lows will linger in the low 60s.
On Thursday, the oppressive heat will persist with highs nearing 98 degrees. While still mostly cloudy, scattered thunderstorms are forecast to develop in the afternoon, offering brief but welcome relief. The storm potential also brings the risk of lightning and sudden weather changes, so residents are urged to take precautions during any outdoor plans.
By Friday, a shift in the weather pattern will bring a noticeable cool-down. Highs will fall back to the upper 80s, and the day may start with a spotty morning thundershower before another round of afternoon storms moves across the area. The overnight temperature will dip to a more comfortable 60 degrees, signaling the start of a calmer, more enjoyable weather stretch.
Saturday and Sunday are shaping up to be ideal summer days, with clear skies and highs in the upper 80s. The weekend will also bring a reprieve from the muggy evenings, as nighttime lows fall into the low 50s and even the upper 40s by Sunday. These crisp nights could make for perfect conditions to enjoy the outdoors, whether it’s camping, evening walks, or simply cooling off after a hot week.
The early part of next week will continue the comfortable trend. Monday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high of 85, closing out the seven-day stretch with a stable and mild forecast.
Though the week started with intense and potentially dangerous heat, a cooler and calmer finish lies ahead.
