If you’ve noticed more moving trucks cruising through your neighborhood this summer, you’re not alone — peak moving season is in full swing. A new report from U-Haul offers insight into where Seattle’s new residents are coming from and where others are headed.
The 2025 Midyear Migration Trends report, based on one-way U-Haul rental data from January through June, reveals that most people relocating to Seattle via U-Haul are coming from nearby western states. Oregon topped the list of out-of-state origins for those moving to the Seattle area, flipping places with California, which held the top spot in 2024. Texas followed in third, replacing Arizona from last year’s rankings. Florida was the only East Coast state to crack the Top 10.
Portland was the No. 1 metro area sending U-Haul movers to Seattle, followed by California’s Bay Area, which leapt from seventh place last year to second in 2025. Phoenix, Arizona, came in third.
Within Washington, the top feeder cities for Seattle-bound movers were Spokane, Vancouver, and Bellingham. Spokane retained its No. 1 spot from 2024, while Vancouver climbed into the top ranks after missing the Top 5 last year.
Seattle wasn’t just a popular destination — it was also a major departure point. The Emerald City ranked as the No. 1 source of U-Haul movers to the Bay Area and Portland. It also ranked in the top five for those heading to Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, and Sacramento, as well as Phoenix.
At the state level, Washington was a top 10 origin for movers to several major metros across the West, including Denver, Las Vegas, and multiple California cities.
U-Haul’s data suggests that migration patterns into the nation’s largest cities, which had slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic, are picking up again. Moves into large metros like Seattle increased in 2025 as urban areas continue to bounce back.
Whether folks are relocating for work, lifestyle, or affordability, one thing’s clear — Seattle continues to see a steady flow of new residents and outbound movers, keeping those U-Haul trucks busy across the region.
