An off-duty major with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular assault after a serious crash in Graham, Washington.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), 49-year-old Chadwick Dickerson was behind the wheel of his personal Dodge Ram Saturday afternoon when he ran into a Ford Expedition carrying six people — including a pregnant woman and three children — at the intersection of 132nd Avenue East and 288th Street East. The impact caused the Expedition to roll into a ditch.

Dickerson, a 24-year veteran of the department and head of its criminal investigation division, has been placed on administrative leave, though he has not been formally charged. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office requested WSP take over the case to avoid a conflict of interest.

The crash sent all six people in the Expedition — a 27-year-old pregnant woman, her husband, mother, and children ages 8, 4, and 3 — to the hospital. The grandmother and Dickerson both suffered broken bones. Dickerson was taken to urgent care by a family member.

Troopers said Dickerson had bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol, and refused field sobriety tests.
