KCHW NEWS REPORTS
Thanks to steady progress today, crews have secured 100% containment around the Deer Fire near Deer Lake, according to Stevens County Fire District 1.
Fire activity remained slow-moving, with interior fuels allowed to burn under close supervision. Crews on the ground, assisted by helicopter support, tackled a tricky ridgeline filled with hazard trees, working carefully to neutralize risks and complete containment lines.
Though the fire is now boxed in, residents may continue to see smoke, a few visible flames, or a glow from the mountain over the next couple of days. A Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) crew will remain on-site overnight to monitor conditions.
On Monday, both DNR and Fire District 1 crews will return to continue mop-up efforts, with a focus on extinguishing remaining hotspots ahead of a forecasted wind event. Helicopters may be called back in to support those efforts, so be alert for aircraft activity in the area.
The public is reminded that the fire remains active inside containment lines. Please avoid the area to ensure firefighter safety.
