KCHW NEWS REPORTS

Federal authorities have ended an intensive search in Idaho’s rugged Sawtooth National Forest for a fugitive Washington man accused of killing his three daughters, after confirming the man spotted by multiple hikers was not the suspect.

The U.S. Marshals Service Greater Idaho Fugitive Task Force said Wednesday that they located and interviewed a hiker who bore a striking resemblance to 39-year-old Travis Decker, the Wenatchee father wanted in connection with the deaths of his daughters, ages 5, 8, and 9. The girls were found dead near a Washington state campground in May following a court-approved visitation with their father.

The hiker, who was not named, matched Decker’s physical description: similar height and weight, dark features, a beard, and tattoos on his arm and calf. Witnesses had reported seeing the man over the weekend in the Bear Creek area of the national forest, prompting a search and public alert issued Sunday.

According to a U.S. Marshals press release, the man was cooperative and explained he had been hiking alone in the area. He was quickly ruled out as a suspect.

“United States Marshal Brent Bunn is grateful for the public’s assistance with this fugitive investigation,” the statement read.

The marshals had previously warned the public not to approach Decker if spotted, noting his past behavior and history of hitchhiking. Travelers and campers in the Sawtooths were urged to be cautious and avoid picking up strangers.

The mistaken identity highlights the challenges of locating Decker, who has been on the run for over a month. Law enforcement continues to follow leads across multiple states, but no confirmed sightings have been reported since May.

The U.S. Marshals and local agencies are asking the public to remain alert and report any information related to Decker’s whereabouts. He is described as a white male, 5-foot-8, 190 pounds, with a long ponytail, beard, and tattoos.
